Where Do Asian Hair Trends Come From? March 18, 2009

Filed under: Hair Fashion — Meredith @ 7:20 am

Asian hair trends are very much influenced by Korea and Japan, due to the exponential growth of the Japanese and later the Korean wave in asia. Lately, even the Taiwanese are making an influence, thanks to the popularity of  their Taiwanese idol dramas and wacky Taiwanese variety shows. Many asians take reference from the hairstyles of their idols and other celebrities in these media. Japanese hair picture books are big thing in asia and asian hair salons are well-stocked with these books for their customers.

In asia, you will hear the latest asian hair terms like Japanese perm, Japanese spa perm, Korean digital perm and even Korean eyelash perm. These are very popular hairstyles in asia, especially with the ladies.

Hollywood also play a part in influencing the asian hair trends, but it is not dominant. Ultimately, asians have different facial features, skin color, eye color, hair texture and hair color from caucasians and naturally they will want to take reference from their own kind. The Japanese and Koreans probably do take some inspiration from Hollywood, but still there is always a difference.

Try out new hairstyles using free virtual hairstyles program September 20, 2008

It’s sooo much fun trying out new hairstyles! Well..I mean virtually. If you are like most people who are less adventurous and afraid of trying out new hairstyles that you see in the magazines, you can ‘try’ it using virtual hairstyle makeover programs.

You can’t imagine how sophisticated the software is. It allows you to upload your picture, do some adjustment to your picture, follow by answering a series of questions on your eye color, current hair color, hair length and etc. It is ok if you have a non full frontal facing picture, as you can indicate markers on your eyes, mouth and even teeth so that the program can churn out suitable hairstyles for you to try on. After you picked a hairstyle, you can do further adjustment to it.

This is an excellent way to visualise how a certain hairstyle or hair color will look like before actually going to your hairdresser.  The fun part is choosing those outrageous hairstyles or hair colors that you normally shunned from or won’t even think twice about. Put them on and see how exciting (or funny) it looks on you!.

If you just want to test it out or try it for fun, you can sign up for the free version, which allows you to play up to about 10 hairstyles. Go for the paid version for under US$20 for 3 months if you want to access their library of over 1000 hairstyles, with unlimited selections and picture uploads.

Take a look at the before and after pictures below…VOILA!

Hair wax a necessity November 27, 2007

So you have seen so many nice hairstyles in magazines and you start to picture yourself having similar look in your mind. Chances are, most of the hairstyles in the magazines had to go through styling to create that picture-perfect look. The number one tool is hair wax and thus is almost a necessity, unless all you want is limp and boring looking hair. Many nice asian hairstyles and perms are achieved using hair wax too.

If you are still shunning from hair wax, thinking that it will give you that hard hair-sprayed look, then its time to remove this idea. Hair wax actually gives a softer and more naturally look, yet able to last through the day. If it starts to wane off, all you need to do is to wet your hands and run through your hair and it will work the magic again, without needing to apply more.

It is always good to apply hair wax on semi wet hair to achieve best results. It is also easier to style on slightly wet hair then dry hair. Simple wet your hands before applying hair wax will do.

There are many kinds of hair wax, some are dry cream based, some are liquid cream types. Then there are all kinds of brands in the market, so how do you choose? The best way is to check out the forums and see what people are using and recommending. However, this is subjective because everyone is different. You will still need to go through trial and errors or try out on sample packs if possible.

I personally like using Tigi hair products, because it last for a long time and smells good at the same time. I used it for my fly-aways, for my long digital perms and even for my short crops.

For creating the rock star look:
Tigi Bed Head Manipulator – A Funky Gunk That Rocks! (57ml/2oz)

– A fiber-forming cream
– Gives body & texture to hair
– Separates & smoothes fly-away with a matte finish
– Long lasting hold
– Gets a spike, twist dreads or punky look

Korean Cosmetic Surgery Trend August 15, 2007

Filed under: Korean Beauty — Meredith @ 4:30 pm

South Korea is dubbed the ‘land of man-made beauties’, with a higher proportion of people who had gone under the knife, as compared to other Asian countries. Cosmetic surgery is common with the TV celebrities, pop stars and even with students who wants to get ahead in life, career or showbiz.

As such, their cosmetic sugery technology and expertise are usually more advanced. Typical cosmetic operations is rhinoplasty (nose job) for making the nose bridge higher and to look sharper, as asians usually have smaller and flatter noses. Other popular ops include double eyelids (Many South Koreans are born with single eyelids) to make the eyes appear bigger and more bambi-like, as well as the jaw/chin portion to make the jawline sharper and more define.

Blood vessels! Please don’t creep up on my eyeballs! February 27, 2007

Filed under: EYE BEAUTY — Meredith @ 4:26 pm

Now if you want to look good, you absolutely cannot have bloodshot eyes (are you trying to scare people in the broad day light? J). For some people who stay up till 4 or 5 am, they will wake up with these bloodshot eyes even though slept till the afternoon.

But what if you have so many things to do that you hardly have time to sleep? Then try sleeping from 10pm to 3am. This is a golden period, so even 4 hours will be sufficient for your beauty. Ok, if you think 10am is too early and you just had your dinner (duh~), then you try going catching a wink from 1 am to 3am, even if its just 2 hours. The important thing here is not going to bed later than 1 am!

Reading for a long period of time will also create stress for your eyes, making them look tired and listless. Why not catch a break and use a few minutes to rest and roll your eyes in circular motions. Your eyeballs do need a beauty regime daily and you can treat this as a form of eyeball exercise that will help make them look larger and brighter.

So now you are coming to an end to this article, will you take a break, drink a glass of water and get started on this eyeball exercises now.
